Shrimad Bhagwad Gita (Bhagwat Gita)

More than five thousand years ago, towards the end of Dwapar Yug, Shri Krishna, who was an incarnation of the Supreme God, Bhagwan Shri Vishnu, imparted spiritual knowledge (Adhyatmik Gyan) to his friend and disciple, Arjun, on the battle-field of Kurukshetra just before the great war of Mahabharat (Mahabharat Yuddh) began. Shri Krishna first explained the various paths of spiritual liberation, most importantly the path of knowledge (Gyan-Yog), the path of devotion (Bhakti-Yog) and the path of action (Karm-Yog). He then advised the confused Arjun to choose the path of action and perform his sacred duty of fighting on the battle-field for defending the truth and virtue. These teachings of the Supreme God (Bhagwaan) were made available to the whole of mankind by Maharshi Vedvyas in the form of a poetic scripture in Sanskrit, which is now known as Shrimad Bhagwad Gita or Bhagwat Gita. It comprises 700 shlokas (verses) organized into 18 chapters. One of the greatest scriptures and sources of spiritual knowledge in the world.

A humble attempt has been made to pick up a few pearls of knowledge (Gyan) from the largest ocean of wisdom, that is Bhagwad Gita, and a few of the multitude of messages (Sandesh) of Bhagwad Gita, and present them here as short articles, under two heads: “Bhagwad Gita ka Gyan” and “Bhagwad Gita ke Sandesh”. To ensure the authenticity of the essence of these articles, the original verses in Sanskrit are quoted. The Hindi meanings of these Sanskrit verses have been taken from “Shrimad Bhagwad Gita”, Code 502, published by Gita Press, Gorakhpur. Wherever interpretation or explanation is felt necessary, reference is made to the commentaries on Bhagwad Gita by highly esteemed personalities, like Swami Ram Sukh Dass Ji or A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. We begin with an Introduction (Parichay) to Shrimad Bhagwad Gita in the Hindi language.
